I welcome applications from undergraduate and graduate students interested in conducting research within my lab and joining our research team.  Positions are available (subject to funding availability) for research assistantships, Co-op placements, honours (BA or BSc) or graduate (MSc Applied Science) students.   All students are expected to take an active role within the lab and contribute to a dynamic learning environment.  Most students working within the lab have backgrounds in either Geography, Earth Science, Geology, Biology, Engineering or Geomatics.

Depending on the student's interests and skills they may undertake research in the following areas:

Core collection & bedform mapping on the Avon River mudflats

Most of my field research takes place within the Bay of Fundy however opportunities exist for research along the Atlantic coast or internationally (dependant on funding availability).  The amount of lab work varies depending on the individual project.

Students have full access to equipment available through the Intertidal Coastal Sediment Transport (IN_CoaST) Research lab and the Maritime  Provinces Spatial Analysis Research Center (MP_SpARC).

Undergraduate:

Students (Saint Mary's University) interested in completing their honours thesis may do so through either the Department of Geography (BA or BSc) or Environmental Studies Program (BSc)Students are encouraged to come speak to me early in their academic career (e.g. 2nd or 3rd year) and apply for a research assistantship within the lab (submit cover letter and resume) by late Fall.

Co-op students (Canadian) should contact me no later than Jan 31 with a cover letter and resume so that funding can be secured for the summer season.

Undergraduate students within a Science Faculty (Canadian) with a strong academic standing are encouraged to apply for an Undergraduate Student Research Award through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Applications deadlines are normally in early winter for the upcoming summer.  Contact your Faculty of Science office for actual deadline dates.

Graduate:

Students (Canadian or International) who are interested in conducting graduate level research within the lab should contact me (resume including GPA and cover letter) prior to Jan 1st.  Application will then need to be made to the Masters of Applied Science Program through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

This is a research thesis-oriented, multidisciplinary degree program where students undertake research of an applied nature.  Theses may be written either as a series of manuscripts to be submitted for publication or by traditional thesis (e.g. chapters).  Students interested in the Co-op option are able to gain valuable work experience while completing their degree.  Numerous opportunities for co-op employment exist in the region both in government labs or private industry.  Refer to the graduate handbook for detailed information regarding the program and funding.  Students are provided with a guaranteed stipend for a maximum of two years and the majority of direct research expenses are covered by research grants.

Those students eligible for external scholarships (e.g. NSERC) are encouraged to apply for these programs.  It should be noted that most program deadlines occur in mid Fall for the following September.  Interested students should contact me by October 1st at the latest.
