JIGSAW ACTIVITY - CHAPTER REVIEW

This assignment is worth 30 points - 10 points undertaking the activity, 20 points the chapter written summary

 

 

ACTIVITY

The class will be divided into groups, the number of groups to be the number of chapters that have to be reviewed.  In this case the number of groups will be 6 as there are 6 chapters to be reviewed.  Each group will be randomly assigned a chapter.

 

Steps to complete this assignment

Ø  Each individual group member must first read the chapter;

Ø  Each group member will create a summary of the chapter:  the summary should include the key points of the reading, including any key terms that are introduced and discussed, the summary should be sufficient in detail that someone who has not read the chapter will be able to get the essential ideas, themes & key points of the chapter imagining that such a person will not have read the chapter;

Ø  The group members will then share their summaries and create one summary agreeing upon what are the key points.  Each group member must be thoroughly familiar with the summary being able to explain the summary to others so that the same information is presented to others.  Each group member must also be contributing equally and fairly to the creation of this collective summary;

Ø  New groups will then be formed composed of one (or two) members of the original group, so that the 2nd group configuration will include at least one person from each of the chapters.

Ø  In the 2nd group, each person will in turn present to this new group their respective chapter summary, going in order of Chapter 1, chapter 2, …..  Each person should ask and be able to answer questions about the chapter in case further clarification is required;

 

 

WRITTEN SUMMARY

Each person is to submit their initial summary, typed, single spaced, double sided, times font, 12 point.  Usually this will be several pages.  This is due the day of the activity. 

 

ASSESSMENT OF WRITTEN COMPONENT

Rubric for written summary

The following was considered in the assessment:

Ø  Summary could be either in point form or in paragraph form, in either case there needed to be organization to the presentation of the points made, connection between various topics/concepts needed to be made as all of them were interconnected;

bullet

Ø  Sufficient detail needed to be provided so that a person who has not read the chapter will be able to grasp the major points of the chapter;

bullet

Ø  The points in the list for each chapter that was circulated to each group needed to be discussed;

bullet

Ø  The comments needed to demonstrate an understanding of the contents through accurate & correct explanations; and,

bullet

Ø  Citations needed to be included since the summary was drawing from the chapter contents, whether quotes were used or not, (note: a works cited/references/bibliography is not sufficient nor only citations for quotes).
