ENGL 2342: Introduction to Drama II

An introduction to modern drama with an emphasis on theories of performance and identity. We will examine theatre as a material cultural practice through which societies negotiate their identities. The claim is that theatre is a place where social identities, such as 'Woman', 'Irishman', 'Successful American Male', are articulated, imposed and resisted, and that theatrical productions go to the heart of societies' ongoing attempts to define themselves.
