This map shows a number of West African kingdoms in the 14thC. These kingdoms waxed and waned (some disappeared altogether) over long periods of time. As you can see, the ancient kingdom of Ghana was located a long way from the modern colony of Gold Coast which adopted (and now bears) the name 'Ghana' after independence in 1957.
